Knowing what’s Owed to you- is First Step to Getting what belongs to you!

In India, a significant number of people are  unaware of their human rights, which can negatively impact their lives and well-being.

WHAT’S MyRightMyMight

Various studies and reports highlight this issue, indicating a need for greater human rights education and awareness initiatives.

• A survey by the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) found that many Indians lack knowledge about their basic human rights and the legal protections available to them. This lack of awareness often results in people being unable to seek redress for violations and abuses they encounter in their daily lives. The impact of this ignorance can be profound. Without knowledge of their rights, individuals are more susceptible to exploitation, discrimination, and abuse.

This is particularly true for marginalized communities, such as Dalits, Adivasis, and women, who often face systemic discrimination and human rights abuses. For example, a lack of awareness about the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act leaves many women unable to seek protection and justice against domestic violence.

Efforts to improve human rights awareness in India have been undertaken by various organizations and government initiatives.

• The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has been actively involved in promoting human rights education through workshops, seminars, and public awareness campaigns.

• Additionally, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like Amnesty International India and Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) work towards educating people about their rights and providing legal assistance to those in need .

• As citizens there is a lot that each of us can do and MyRight-MyMight is aimed at achieving this collectively via the following actions ( the list is not exhaustive):

• Educational programs in schools and community centers can play a crucial role in bridging the knowledge gap.

• Incorporating human rights education into the school curriculum can empower young people with the knowledge they need to stand up for their rights and the rights of others.

• Community-based programs can help educate adults, particularly in rural and marginalized communities, about their legal rights and the mechanisms available to protect them

• Creating a bridge and connect between organisations & official who are empowered to help protect rights entitlement
